Barn Owl carving created for a two-part article that appeared in Wildfowl Carving Magazine (June 2025) and later in the book Owl Painting and Carving.
The owl is carved from white pine with formed tinplate wings and tail and glass eyes. Painted in traditional milk paint and worked to develop the crackle and chippy character often found on old painted surfaces, creating an authentic aged appearance.
The use of wood, tinplate, and milk paint reflects the mixed-material tradition found in early American folk carvings and decorative objects.
Two antique maple bases are offered with the sculpture. The taller base is turned from a repurposed cannonball bedpost. The shorter base is a repurposed antique turning retaining its original chipping paint. The buyer may select either base.
