Whale Ship Sign - SOLD!
Whale Ship Sign
Folk art sign in the form of a whale, based on a historic directional sign once used for visitors to the famous whaling ship Charles W. Morgan before her restoration and exhibition at Mystic Seaport. This piece is a faithful copy of an example that appeared at auction on Cape Cod in recent years.
Cut from a carefully chosen antique board with beautiful natural patina on the reverse. The sign is hand-painted in traditional milk paint and lightly distressed, with crackled surfaces that echo the look of early painted maritime signage. Nearly as much attention was given to the reverse as to the painted face.
Made in the spirit of early American sign making using traditional materials and finishes, reflecting the maritime traditions of New England that have long influenced my work.
Actual shipping costs will be applied.
