The Moontown Pickle Stompers are a high-energy jazz and blues ensemble dedicated

to reviving and celebrating the rich musical traditions of rural Indiana and the

broader Midwest. With a performance style rooted in immersive audience engagement,

we create an unforgettable experience that brings people together through music,

history, and entertainment.

Our name reflects our deep connection to Noblesville, Indiana, drawing inspiration

from Moontown Pike and the long standing Southern old-time band tradition of

incorporating playful, quirky phrases into band names—akin to legendary groups like

the Skillet Lickers.

Musical Style & Repertoire

Our sound is a distinctive fusion of jazz and blues, anchored in the string band tradition but

elevated by the powerful presence of a trombone. We specialize in high-energy performances

that captivate audiences and transport them to an earlier era of American music that they

didn’t know they loved.

Genre

We are a 1930s hot Jazz and Blues band. Not to be confused with the jazz you grew up

avoiding. Our sound and style come from an era when jazz was norm-breaking and rebellious.

We play it that way

Repertoire

We draw from s number of midwestern rural jazz and blues traditions. Generally we select

numbers that a) swing, b) are challenging to learn, c) will engage our audience, d) are a bit

surprising.

Influences

1920s jazz and blues legends: Cab Calloway, Blind Willie McTell, Jack Teagarden, Tommy

Dorsey, Big Bill Broonzy, Loius Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael and the Hoosier Hotshots.

Tuba Skinny, Pokey LaFarge and Doreen Ketchens are among our modern influences.

(We’re not the ony folks doing this.)

Signature Songs & Arrangements

Five Foot Two/Mobile, Minnie the Moocher, I Like Bananas (Because The Have No Bones)

Audience

Bars, private events and music festivals, including our ongoing role as the house band for the

Front Porch Music Festival. (We even have an large annual performance where Santa Claus

sits in. [Geoff never seems to be able to make this performance.])

We‘ll play anywhere where a high energy crowd is available.

A Unique Sound

Our mix of pre-1940s music is unparalleled, evoking nostalgia while remaining fresh and

exciting. Many recognize our music from their grandparents’ generation, even if they’ve never heard it

performed live. We defy conventional genre classifications, blending historic influences into something new.

Instrumentation

The presence of a trombone in a string band setting creates a powerful and unexpected

dynamic. All performers perform solid harmony vocals.

Performance Antics & Stage Presence

A vintage aesthetic combined with humor and relentless energy.

A deep connection with the audience, fostering an interactive and electric atmosphere.

Mission & Philosophy

Geoff Davis, as an educator, is passionate about sharing Indiana’s forgotten jazz heritage.

Our ultimate goal is simple: to bring people together through an unforgettable musical

experience.
