Today I made a quick-ish drive to St. Charles, Illinois (West side of Chicago) for the North American Vintage Decoy (etc.) Show. My work -- decoys and otherwise -- is inspired by a handful of great New England carvers. I've read about these gentlemen's lives. I've studied every photograph I can find of their work. I've written about them. But -- I had never seen their work first hand. Today I saw the work of Charles Hart, Elmer Crowell and Joseph Lincoln.
The NAVD and SCS (hence forward simply "the decoy show") brought some of the most impressive dealers and auction houses within a few hours drive of home. In addition the McNair carving dynasty were there and displaying work representing a father and two son's lifework.
Over the next few days I will feature photos, references and a brief narrative about how these carvers have affected my work.
