To the Death - A Sperm Whale and Giant Squid

1,700.00

My Maine summers were filled with ships and the sea. Everything nautical fascinated me. Whales and whaling -- though not particularly a Maine tradition -- didn't escape my attention.

As a child, I spent hours with books about ships and the sea. I remember two specific illustrations of sperm whales in mortal combat with giant squids. These battles are epic and mysterious. Squids are found in the stomachs of sperm whales and the giant scars of quid are found on their bodies. Recently scientists have mounted cameras on sperm whales in hopes of catching a glimpse at one of these epic battles.

Late spring I travelled to Montreal to study the painting techniques with an award winning decoy carver. The techniques that I learned there produce an ancient and alligatored surface seen on this whale.
